When our North Adams, MA customer reached out to Fogarty's Home Services to help make his attic more energy efficient, we were happy to help. One improvement we made was to install an exclusive "David Lewis Hatch Cover™" (named for the engineer who developed it). This hatch cover rests right over the pull-down stairs. It stops air leakage and insulates over the stairs. Made of lightweight SilverGlo™ foam insulation, you just lift it aside to go up into your attic, and set it back in place when you leave. SilverGlo™ foam insulation has graphite infused into the foam which bumps up the insulation value by 24% over standard EPS foam. It also has a radiant barrier (foil) on the flat lid to reflect heat back in during winter and out in the summer, so the insulation isn't doing all the work by itself. Now our happy customer has a tighter, more comfortable, less drafty home. He'll notice a much more comfortable temperature year-round and lower energy bills. "We Fix Uncomfortable Homes!"
This homeowner in North Adams, MA called us after he noticed that he had mold in his attic. While part of his issue was his roof leaking, another part entirely was the air leaking and high humidity caused by insufficient insulation. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived, he noticed that this homeowner had blown-in fiberglass insulation.
We first had to remove the insulation in the attic, leaving it bare,. We then began air sealing the cracks and crevices in the attic. This is where the "before" shot is taken - we are beginning that work. It is Zypfoam, a low pressure one component polyurethane foam sealant. It is designed to seal, fill, bond, and stop air infiltration. It is a very important step to prevent the air you pay to cool from heading up into your attic!
After that, we re-insulated the attic with our TruSoft™ blown-in cellulose. TruSoft™ is 85% recycled content. The other 15% is liquid boric acid, which makes it flame resistant, mold resistant, and rodent resistant.
This homeowner in North Adams, MA called us initially with concerns about her insulation. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived, he also noted the inadequate, open-pit sump pump she had installed next to her stairs in her basement.
We were able to help this homeowner. We removed her old, inadequate sump pump and installed a TripleSafe™ sump pump system. This system features three pumps to prevent the homeowner's basement from flooding. The first pump is a 1/3 hp, cast iron Zoeller pump that can pump up to 2200 gallons per hour, 8 feet high. Should the first pump fail or not be able to keep up with the temporary flow of water, a 1/2 hp AC back-up pump on a separate discharge line can pump 3,900 gallons of water per hour. If the power fails, then a third, battery operated "UltraSump" pump automatically pumps up to 12,000 gallons of water. It is the perfect solution for basements that may become wet - especially this homeowners. Plus, there is now an airtight cover for their sump pump, which prevents moisture and odors. They now will be able to have a more comfortable home!
This home owner in North Granby, CT called us out to give him a full energy evaluation. While we were going through the home on our inspection, we noticed that he had his HV/AC system in his attic. Though it seems like a good spot to put these large systems, it might be the worst place possible. These systems are in an attic which can have a temperature from 140 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter! When you are trying to get hot air into your home to heat it from this system in the winter, it has to work extremely hard to fight the frigid temperatures to run. Then, the hot air it produces goes into a sheet metal duct that is like a freezer—making the hot air it just made cold by the time it gets into your living space! That is why the system can never stop running making it a very expensive problem. To fix this, we first put our 2 inch Silverglo EPS foam board with a reflective barrier on top of the duct. Then on the sides and the bottom, we sprayed the ducts with 2-part closed cell spray foam. This will help protect the system in the extreme climates it can face. Now that this system is protected, it will not run nearly as much—saving the home owner money and helping his family stay warm!
This home owner in North Granby, CT called us because they had big ice dams on there home. Ice dams can be very disruptive to a home and could cause you to pay thousands on fixing the damage they made. Ice dams occur when heat from your living space escapes into the attic and heats the roof deck. This will melt the snow on the roof. The water runs down to the gutter line and refreezes. The more snow that melts, the bigger the dam gets and more of a chance it damages your home. To fix this we have to stop the heat from entering the attic. First thing we do is remove the old insulation and start air sealing. this will stop heat from coming through any gaps, cracks, or any other penetrations. After this we blow our Trusoft cellulose insulation to a R-value of R-60 to further protect the home. Now that this is done. The heat from your home will not be able to reach the roof deck and cause any more ice dams!
