Cold, unhealthy air typically infiltrates your house from the bottom (whether that be through a crawl space or a basement). In this case, our client was experiencing an extremely cold draft from their basement area. Spots like the one featured in this picture is where a lot of that outdoor air is creeping in from. We were able to fix this area by applying spray foam (which air seals and insulates at the same time). Techniques like this allow us to create a comfortable and healthy home for our clients.
This homeowner knew that their house wasn't performing as well as it could've been (as in they felt like they were constantly have to turn up the AC/Heat). What they didn't know was why. They had Complete Home Solutions out to their house to find that out for them.
Among some other small problems that we fixed (such as weatherstripping some duct work in the house), we found that the attic was a primary source of their house's poor performance. We were able to correct this by air sealing (primarily in the form of caulk) and blowing in cellulose insulation. We also built an insulation dam so that the homeowner would have easy access to the attic whenever they needed it.
This house in Millersville, Maryland was having a hard time keeping all of its rooms a constant temperature. The upstairs would be hot while the downstairs would be freezing. The homeowner heard that there were companies who fixed these kinds of problems and among them he found Complete Home Solutions. Our auditor won him over with his attention to detail and ability to explain things in understandable terms.
Once there, we discovered that his crawl space was not up to snuff. There was no air sealing, no vapor barrier, and the duct work was left exposed. All of these things were contributing to the homeowner's discomfort. We fixed these problems by sealing off all openings in the crawl with polysio foam board and spray foam/caulk, installing a 6 mil vapor barrier, and insulating the duct work with spray foam. Now that he has a crawl space has stopped letting cold air flood in, the homeowner can enjoy a comfortable temperature no matter where he is in his house.
A lack of air sealing and not enough insulation is a bad combination that you, and your house, will suffer from. This client could not stand how uncomfortable her house was (cold in the winter, hot in the summer, you get it). Her attic was the major causes behind her discomfort. Luckily, for a company like Complete Home Solutions, this is an easy fix. We sealed up the attic and put in enough cellulose insulation to bring the insulation levels up to R-49 (the recommended levels for our climate zone). The end result - a much more comfortable home for this client.
Winter was starting to get really cold for these homeowners - while driving their utility bills up! That's why they were thrilled to come across Complete Home Solutions - the reliable home comfort expert. We were able to provide the solutions this house needed to keep it warm through the winter (and cool through the summer).
The attic was a major area for improvement. Taking care of causes of air leakage (through air sealing methods) and applying the BPI recommended levels of blown in cellulose insulation would make a significant difference in this family's home. They can now enjoy winter from inside a warm, comfortable home.
