Our client in Mascouche reached out to us with concerns about the condition of their attic before winter. Upon inspection, we discovered excessive humidity and air leaks that compromised the home's energy efficiency and increased mold risk. We replaced the old insulation, sealed air leaks with ZypFoam, and installed 16 inches of TruSoft cellulose insulation to ensure optimal thermal protection and long-term moisture resistance for the winter.

The attic had mold formation, was extremely cold in winter, and very hot in summer. Specialist Karim identified the causes as insufficient insulation, air leaks, and poor ventilation, leading to health risks and structural damage. We removed the old insulation, identified and sealed all sources of air leaks, and removed mold spores. Using high-quality ZypFoam sealant, we closed gaps to prevent air leakage and installed new TruSoft cellulose insulation, achieving a thermal value of R60. This resulted in significant reductions in heating and cooling costs, elimination of moisture build-up, and a mold-free, energy-efficient, and comfortable attic.

The problem

Ms. Smith contacted Systèmes Éconergie because she had problems with ice dams on her roof in winter. This very common problem is due to poor attic insulation and the presence of air leaks.

The solution

We removed the old wool insulation in order to seal the air leaks such as joints, holes and others. Then, we installed vents on each side of the attic to allow additional ventilation in the attic and prevent air from touching the insulation. Eventually, we blew just over 16” of cellulose fibers to achieve an R-60 value.

PROBLEM

Our client, a resident of Boucherville, contacted us to come and inspect their attic. There was an excess of drafts in their house, which was very uncomfortable. Additionally, the hydro bills were very high, especially during the months of December, January, and February due to the overuse of heating systems to compensate for the cold drafts.

During our free inspection, our specialist Alexandrine examined the attic. She noticed the inadequate amount of existing fiberglass insulation. Furthermore, our specialist identified a sealing problem: She explained to our client that the presence of air leaks in the attic would diminish the effectiveness of the insulation. 

SOLUTION

After obtaining our client's authorization, our team of workers, led by Colin, began by removing the old insulation. This step is crucial because air leaks may be hidden underneath. Then, they conducted a detailed inspection to identify all sources of air leaks. Our excellent product, ZypFoam, was used to seal the air leaks. As for the attic access hatch, it is the largest opening in the attic that can let air escape, hence the importance of insulating it very well. For this, we used our revolutionary thermal insulator, SilverGlo. Finally, we blew approximately 17 inches of TruSoft cellulose fiber insulation into the attic to achieve an optimal thermal value of R60. The cellulose used is fire-resistant as well as resistant to mold formation.

Mr. Choudhry recently bought a house in POINTE-AUX-TREMBLES .Upon inspection, it was strongly recommended that the attic insulation needed to be changed as there was only 6” of fiberglass insulation.

With the climate of Quebec, 6 inches of insulation in an attic is far from enough to have a comfortable home and to keep the air heated during cold weather.

Often, Poor insulation also leads to higher heating and cooling costs.
