This Leesburg VA home was uncomfortable to the homeowners. They called us to get help and our Home Performance Sale Pro Eric went out to perform a no cost whole home inspection to try and find a solution to their problems. The attic had insulation that was not getting the job done. The performance level of the existing insulation (otherwise known as R Value) was less than what would be needed for the type of home and space in the attic along with the fact that the attic was not air sealed. This meant that conditioned air made by the HVAC system was being allowed to escape from the rooms it was made to cool down or heat up, causing the HVAC system to run more and use up more energy. Our production crew came and removed the existing insulation, then used Zyp Foam to create an air seal around the cracks and can light fixtures that accessed the rooms below. They would then install Rock Wool insulation to cover the base of the attic and then blow in Tru Soft Cellulose insulation to fill the space to its needed R Value. Shown here is the attic at the mid way point in the project when the existing insulation was removed and the air seal had been completed. Then shown as after is the finished project with Tru Soft insulation covering everything.
Builder grade material is often not what is needed to deliver top level home performance. Builder grade is what most home builders use because it "meets code" and will pass the test of "is this home livable?" We offer solutions to improve home performance and provide a comfort and quality that is leaps and bounds above what "code" will deliver. This attic wall was found to be doing a poor job of keeping outside temperatures from impacting the attic which was also the case with the walls of the rooms in the home below. We installed Silver Glo insulation panels to the wall and then air sealed them with Zyp Foam to create an air seal.
One of the many steps involved in helping to make this Leesburg VA home more comfortable was adding a Rock Wool wrap to insulate and protect the chimney. Having been air sealed at the base of the chimney and then having the wrap extend above the top layer of insulation in the attic helps keep heated air passing through the chimney from escaping into the attic and making it too hot. Rock Wool is a fire safe material that both insulates and protects.
This attic in Leesburg Virginia was upgraded with a radiant barrier to help keep temperatures down and energy cost lower than they had been. Applying the radiant barrier throughout the attic will help to keep external heat from penetrating into the attic.
This Leesburg VA home was suffering from poor insulation that failed to provide adequate coverage. This was causing discomfort to the homeowner by leaving rooms too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. When our sales professional Eric visited the home, he provided a full home evaluation and found a variety of solutions for the homeowner to choose from. The homeowner ended up deciding they wanted to have all of the old insulation removed and install new high-quality TruSoft cellulose insulation. TruSoft offers better coverage for a more even insulation job than the previous insulation and will last longer with less chance of rodents in the space due to being coated with a safe, animal deterrent.
